There aren’t enough ladies in the sport, unfortunately, and as such there are some gaping holes in the record books where ladies records should be – LET’S FILL THEM!

Jayme-Lee Neilsen, Naomi Spicer and Kahlee Andrews with triple world champion Pedro Carbonell - these three ladies are all Australian spearfishing champions and hold multiple records

A few women’s records that you could come across easily and need to be claimed include:

- All mackerel species except Spanish

- Chinese footballer trout

- Leopard/common trout (current 4.6kg)

- All bream and snapper (found on most shore dives!)

- Dolphin fish

- Black jewfish

- Green jobfish

- All emperors (current spangle record is 3.625kg and all other emps are up for grabs)

- Luderick

- Black Drummer

These are just a few, but there are plenty more! If you don’t have a records book and want one, let us know and we will try to line one up for you.

Adreno Sponsored Spearo Kahlee Andrews displaying her first Coral Trout - with current record just over 4kg, this is one fish that needs a new record!

First off, you will need to land the fish unassisted. This means that no one else can touch you or your float line, but you can be passed an unloaded gun as long as you load it yourself. And you are allowed help with getting the fish into the boat. If you get a fish that you think might be a record, don’t gut and gill it, and keep it on ice until you can find some government certified scales (most butcher shops, tackle shops, fishing clubs, spearfishing clubs, and grocery stores will let you use their scales if you ask nicely). Once you have weighed it on certified scales take a length measurement (with photos) and a girth measurement (with photos). Then you will need to fill out this form [PDF download] .

If possible, keep your fish until your record has been confirmed.

Most importantly Ladies, let us know when you get your record!

This speargun is sooo new it doesn’t even have a name yet and call us crazy but we’re going to let you name it.

Head to our Facebook page and find the Name The Gun image for your chance to name this new beast and win yourself one to keep. All you have to do is comment on the image with your suggestions and we’ll pick our favourite.

Featuring twin 16mm rubbers and a 7mm shaft, The Adreno “???” is a great choice for all levels of spearfishing.

The Adreno “???” barrel has a wall thickness of .078″ (2mm) and is made from high grade carbon fibre which reduces flex dramatically when under heavy power which in turn results in more energy transfer to the spear shaft and most importantly, a more accurate shot.

This high performance speargun features an integral track which also adds strength and rigidity to the barrel and is hand assembled and tested by Aimrite to ensure the highest quality.

Truly an amazing speargun made to Adreno and Aimrite’s highest standards, this yet to be named speargun is a steal at only $499!

When chasing Jacks i have found that eye contact along with body language is a major playing factor when trying to close distance between yourself and the fish.

These fish are smart compared to say kingfish. Once eye contact is made i find that they tend to quickly create distance form the diver.

I have found that when chasing jacks if i try to use peripheral vision plus swim slowly and try to relaxed that i tend to be able to close some distance between the fish and myself allowing for a quick and clean shot. <ins datetime="2012-01-23T01:42:45+00:00"></ins>

Spearfishing NZ has a great newsletter for their members and we would like to share an article from the latest edition, because we can’t focus enough on diver safety.

Spearfishing NZ received an email a week after the National Champs had concluded, which highlighted the responsibility both divers and recreational boat users have in following Maritime Rules. A recreational boat driver contacted the club to complain about some spearfishers who took part in the competition but had failed to mark their location clearly. De boat driver had to make risky moves to avoid running them over and got a real scare. Spearfishing NZ wrote the following letter to its members:

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

“We divers are an independent breed of sports men and women. By the very nature of our activity we maintain much more independence in what we do than for example, a person playing in a sports team, or a lone competitor in an arena such as a golf course. In those situations there is a defined responsibility on how you will conduct your self built into the culture of the activity.

The competition in February

Divers on the other hand will often make their own rules about how they engage in their activity because the conventions of various other sporting activities do not seem to apply. Or do they? Deerstalkers may be alone, but nevertheless have rules of safety such as identifying their target, checking where their bullet will end up if the target is missed, wearing a colour identifiable to other hunters, carrying a set of antlers upside down and not on the top of their pack. It is these sorts of decisions that help keep them safe while not putting at risk other users of the bush and mountains.

In some ways diving is not all that different. Apart from you and your buddy, you may start out the day alone. Unless you are several kilometres off shore, there is a very high probability you will on a number of occasions throughout the day be sharing the same coastal water with other boat users. If you think about it, when recreational boats are heading out for the day to fish or relax they often travel within 100-300m from shore, the very same stretch of water spearfishers are swimming in. All those passing boats have Maritime Rules on their side that say you should be identifiable as a diver in the water and that means a diver’s flag!

Make sure you can be seen from afar!

From your perspective you may simply see that flag as a measure for self protection, but it has compelling significance for boaties who know the Rules, telling them to slow to 5 knots or less within 200m of the flag. While many of them know that, less well observed by recreational boaties and divers alike is the Maritime Rule that says 5 knots at all times with 200m of shore!

If you have not got a flag on your float why not organise to get one ASAP and thereby identifying yourself as one who is serious about your own safety as well as considerate towards other recreational boat users.”

Here is a little footage of catching a crayfish (ornate) by hand. Down in NSW it is illegal to shoot crayfish with a speargun in order to pull them from caves and cracks. Note in the short video clip that the crayfish caught clearly has eggs on it underbelly, though prior to being pulled from the crack i was unable to see any eggs. In QLD it is perfectly legal to shoot crayfish with spearguns, One could assume that when catching crayfish in QLD water extra care should be taken in order to not shoot crayfish holding eggs.

Down south we do not get the numbers of manta rays that are experienced up in and around the great barrier reef, so for NSW spotted the eagle ray will have to do. The only bad thing about swimming with these rays is that they tend to congregate around pinnacles and in areas where currents first hit islands.

These areas are also the place to look for pelagic fish, i have honestly lost count of the times that i would be daydreaming, swimming with one of these rays only to have a large pelagic, say a kingfish cruse in for a look and be just out of range by the time i noticed it was there. enjoy the clip

We love the way Christina thinks about Scuba and Freediving, saying, “with scuba diving you are observing the underwater life, with free-diving it’s more that you’re interacting with it and you’re becoming part of the ocean. So I see one more as an observer, and one more as a participant of the ocean.”

Christina training for her record dive in Hawaii

“When you’re scuba diving you have less interaction with marine life because animals are less likely to approach you with all the equipment on, what I love about free diving is the marine animals are so curious to approach you when you’re under water on one breath, particularly other marine mammals.”

A month has passed since the Adreno BIG 5 competition ended. The fantastic prizes have been handed out, we have some great photos of fish, and we are now a bit sad that it all ended so quick!

But we would like to take a quick moment to thank the sponsors of the competition – it is always great to see organisations willing to donate their resources to Australian spearos who are getting out there and giving it a go.

The two sponsors of the BIG 5 competition were none other than Rob Allen and Riffe.

Rob Allen donated a 1.4m Rob Allen Sparid Railgun which went to Bryson Sheehy who came first in the competition. And Riffe Australia contributed a Riffe Torpedo float which was awarded to Brendan Chan who was in close second place. Between these prizes and the Adreno sponsored wetsuit, and over $300 in vouchers, we had a great prize pool for the first ever online spearfishing competition!

Keep an eye out this year for an even BIGGER and better competition.

Thanks again Riffe and Rob Allen!!

About 6 months ago I decided that my passion for spearfishing and the ocean was becoming more than just a hobby. I was working week on week off out at the mines and no matter how much I dived on my breaks either in Cairns or Overseas it was never enough. I found myself getting majorly depressed on my week out at work especially when you are working in 45 degree heat loading explosives for 12 hours a day. The money was good but I just wasn’t feeling it anymore and decided a change was needed.

My good mates Quinn and Rob who I dive with regularly up here both work in the Cairns local dive shop and told me that there are a high number of people who come through the shop and want to go out spearfishing but no one to go with. They also said there was a market for private Scuba charters where divers can come up here and go diving and not have to see 70 other divers on a big tourist boat. With the market there and myself having a very successful uncle to go into business with it was decided that I would quit the mines and start running a charter business.

Dream come true! Its been a very interesting last couple of months getting everything up to scratch, permits, boats, advertising and searching for the best ground to put people onto fish! We are now ready to take bookings and will have prices up on our Facebook page in the next week. Anyone interested should like our page Great Barrier Reef Bluewater Charters on FB and send me a message if interested.

Here are some recent pics and a video which shows that our research has paid off and we have the best chance of putting you onto whatever species you are after. Enjoy!
